Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) voted to protect affordable healthcare for all Americans, as the House Republicans attempted for the 31st time in the 112th Congress to repeal or defund the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare.

“We should not have to worry about having to file for bankruptcy just because someone in our family gets sick,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “Because of Obamacare – because President Obama cares – every American has access to affordable healthcare. Because I care, I voted against this Republican repeal that would take away the basic human right to affordable healthcare.”

Because of Obamacare, in Congresswoman Wilson’s district:

• 41,000 children with preexisting health conditions cannot be denied coverage;
• 4,200 seniors in the district received prescription drug discounts worth $2.5 million, an average discount of $590 per senior. By 2020, the law will close the donut hole;
• 6,600 young adults under 26 now have health insurance through their parents’ plans, and
• 270,000 residents with private health insurance coverage are now protected from rescission of their health coverage if they get sick, and 150,000 people in health care plans no longer have lifetime limits imposed on them.

“As members of Congress, we have a wonderful health plan, and we should want nothing less for our constituents,” Congresswoman Wilson said. “And yet, the Republicans are voting for the 31st time to repeal or defund the Affordable Care Act, and they are attempting to take away these critical protections.”
