Congresswoman Wilson Announces Scholarships for South Florida Students
For Immediate Release: 9/16/2011 Contact: Mahen Gunaratna, (202) 225-4506 Congresswoman Wilson Announces Scholarships for South Florida Students Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-17) announced today that nine students from South Florida will receive Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Educational Scholarships. The scholarship fund was founded in 1988 and is a national program that awards scholarships to highly motivated students who intend to pursue full-time undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degrees. Recipients of this program were selected by a nine-member volunteer panel in the district office of Congresswoman Wilson. “These young minds have not only excelled academically, but have displayed a level of leadership and commitment to service that makes our community proud,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “These scholarships are a tangible way to support our future leaders. By sponsoring these students today, we are making a long-term investment in our community.” The criteria for the scholarships require that each student have a minimum 2.5 GPA, demonstrate leadership ability, and participate in community service. Rep. Frederica S. Wilson is a first-term congresswoman representing the 17th District of Florida, including Northern Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward Counties. She is a former state legislator and school principal and the founder of the 5000 Role Models for Excellence Project, a mentoring program for young males at risk of dropping out of school. |
