Rep. Frederica Wilson today issued the following statement in recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month, celebrated during the month of May:

“Jewish American Heritage Month is a time to recognize the rich history of the Jewish community and the contributions they’ve made to the greater American story. The Jewish people arrived in America from all parts of the world and made our nation their home, a refuge from persecution in Europe and a place to practice their religion freely and openly.

“Over the years, Jewish Americans have excelled in all facets of American life. They have enriched the South Florida community in particular with their generosity of spirit, devotion to serving the least of us, and commitment to justice and equality.

“Let us also remember our friend and ally, Israel, and the unbreakable bond between Israel and not only Jewish Americans, but the American people as a whole. Our bond is rooted not only in shared history and culture but, most importantly, in shared values.

“This month, we rededicate ourselves to embracing the diversity of our nation and recognizing the lasting contributions of the Jewish community.”

Rep. Frederica S. Wilson is a first-term congresswoman representing the 17th District of Florida, including Northern Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward Counties. She is a former state legislator and school principal and the founder of the 5000 Role Models for Excellence Project, a mentoring program for young males at risk of dropping out of school.
