House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi speaking at the event, which was streamed on Facebook Live, calling for tighter gun control laws in order to stop mass violence.

"85 percent of the American people, gun owners, republicans, democrats, independents...NRA members, support expanding background checks," Pelosi said.

Pictures of the 49 victims were held up, and each of their names was read at the ceremony.

Democrats are pushing for the legislation before a seven-week congressional recess starts this weekend.
