Program awards 81 college scholarships to Miami-Dade minority students
MIAMI (WSVN) — Almost a hundred Miami-Dade high school seniors received scholarships for college, thanks to a special program. Monday night, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project held its prestigious annual Academic Signing Day at Jungle Island. Eighty-one young men signed scholarships to the colleges or universities they will be attending or enrolling in. Role Model Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, served as the keynote speaker at the event. The program’s founder, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson, was also in attendance. "We have been mentoring young boys from elementary school through middle school and high school," she said. "These young men tonight are receiving scholarships, and when they were funding these scholarships, they were not even born." The program has awarded millions in scholarships to minority male students since it began in 1993. |
