Rep. Wilson’s Statement on the Passage of the Continuing Resolution to Keep the Government Open

Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson released the following statement on the passage of the Continuing Resolution to keep Government open, to which she voted ‘yes’:

“Our most basic duty as Congress is to keep the government running because a shutdown is never worth the cost. Denying pay to our troops, TSA workers, and millions of Americans who depend on government services is inexcusable. Democrats have always stood ready to find common ground and work with our Republican colleagues to deliver for the American people. Today proves that commitment. This bill to keep the government open even includes over $10 billion in disaster aid for those impacted by the hurricanes this year in Florida. We also avoided some of the poison pills pushed by far-right extremists. These wins are thanks to House Democrats’ efforts.

“But let’s be clear: we didn’t have to pass this bill at the eleventh hour before government closes. We had a bipartisan deal to keep the government open. Then House Republicans, taking their marching orders from Elon Musk, threw it all away to push us to the brink of a shutdown. I’m deeply disappointed this bill stripped out critical measures like the Haitian Economic Lift Program and proposals to ease everyday costs for working families. Yet even after days of chaos, Republicans came back to Democrats to clean up their mess—because they learned the hard way that Elon Musk has no idea how to govern.

“These last two days are just a preview of the disaster ahead if Republicans continue to put billionaires before the American people. The Republican Party isn’t just ignoring the American people—they’re selling them out to Elon Musk and his gang of billionaire cronies. Instead of serving the public, they’re handing over the reins of power to President Elon Musk, a tech overlord who’s accountable to no one but his own greed. Do you remember ever seeing his name on the ballot? Did you vote for him to be President?

“The American people deserve better than being ruled by the whims of out-of-touch billionaires — billionaires pulling the strings while hardworking Americans get crushed.”
