Congresswoman Wilson’s Statement on Miami-Dade Schools’ Free Breakfast and Lunch Announcement

Miami, Fla. – Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) issued the following statement on the Miami-Dade County Public Schools decision to provide free breakfast and lunch for all students.

“This is exactly what our students need,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “As a former school principal and educator at Miami-Dade Public County Schools, I’m beaming with pride at the announcement of free breakfast and lunch for MDCPS students. Providing our growing students with reliable and cost-free meals helps support healthier kids who are ready to learn. I commend stakeholders for their years of advocacy and applaud MDCPS for their leadership.”

Congresswoman Wilson has long championed policies to expand access to healthy and free meals in our nation’s schools. Most recently, she voted for the Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids Act which expands school and summer meal programs, increases access to programs like the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and addresses child hunger. This legislation includes Congresswoman Wilson’s proposal to ensure that every student has access to a salad bar in their school.
