Wilson Statement on Anniversary of January 6 Insurrection

Miami, FL — Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement in response to the January 6, 2020, attack on the U.S. Capitol:

"One year ago, today, the world seemingly stopped as rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol in a violent attempt to overthrow democracy and prevent congressional lawmakers from certifying President-elect Joe Biden's victory. A monument built to preserve unity and integrity amongst our government became a shocking crime scene at the hands of cowardly citizens whose main intent was to divide us and spread misinformation about our country's electoral process.

"In the past year, my colleagues who serve on the Select Committee to investigate the January 6th insurrection have worked tirelessly to bring the insurgents to justice. I commend them for their efforts and stand in solidarity with them on the urgency to take every step possible to ensure that it never happens again. In addition, everyone who was there that day owes an enormous debt of gratitude to the Capitol Police officers who courageously put their own lives on the line to save ours.

"While we witnessed our democracy temporarily teetering on that fateful day, we also witnessed it withstand a previously unimaginable assault. Moving forward, I can only hope that this day will serve as a reminder that the United States is still the strongest nation in the world, and any individual who threatens the sanctity of its democracy will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
