BNN, Wojciech Zylm, March 7

At the highly anticipated State of the Union Address, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) underscored her unwavering commitment to higher education by inviting two distinguished guests.

Dr. Larry Robinson, president of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), and Dr. Malou C. Harrison, executive vice president and provost of Miami Dade College (MDC), joined her, symbolizing the importance of supporting educational institutions and historically minority-serving institutions (MSIs).

Congresswoman Wilson's selection of Dr. Robinson and Dr. Harrison as guests for the event is a testament to her dedication to the educational sector. Both individuals have made significant contributions to their respective institutions, emphasizing the transformative power of education in creating opportunities for students to thrive.

Wilson, serving as the ranking member of the Higher Education Committee, has been a vocal advocate for providing resources and support to educators, highlighting the role of universities in shaping the nation's future.

Wilson's legislative endeavors, such as the introduction of the LOAN Act, aim to make higher education more accessible and affordable for students. As an HBCU alumna, she has consistently championed the cause of HBCUs, acknowledging their critical role in offering educational opportunities to underserved communities. The congresswoman's efforts extend beyond legislation, as demonstrated by her founding of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project, a program designed to mentor and prevent dropout among boys and young men of color.

Dr. Harrison's career spans over 35 years, during which she has played a pivotal role in advancing equity and academic excellence at Miami Dade College. Her leadership has resulted in significant partnerships and funding to support underserved students.

Dr. Robinson, leading FAMU, has made notable contributions in academia, research, and administration, particularly in environmental sciences. His involvement in national STEM initiatives further showcases his commitment to advancing education and scientific innovation.

The State of the Union Address serves not only as a platform to discuss national issues but also as an opportunity for lawmakers to highlight their advocacy for critical causes.

By inviting Dr. Robinson and Dr. Harrison, Congresswoman Wilson not only celebrates their achievements but also reinforces the message that education is a cornerstone of societal progress and equity. The presence of these educational leaders at such a prominent event underscores the collective responsibility to foster environments where every student has the chance to succeed.
