Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) had lunch with Alvin Davis, the Miramar High School band director who was one of the finalists for the 2012 National Teacher of the Year award, and his family. Joining them were Mr. Davis’s wife, their baby daughter and his mother-in-law. Mr. Davis and the other state winners were honored at a White House ceremony this morning.
“As an educator, I am proud that Florida’s Teacher of the Year, Alvin Davis, was a finalist for National Teacher of the Year,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “What Mr. Davis does in teaching music, encouraging his band members to attend college and providing mentors for them is the kind of creative formula for success that I love to see in schools. Music is such a critical part of public education – it’s scientifically proven to help students learn math and foreign languages, and it provides another outlet for children to excel.”
After their lunch, Congresswoman Wilson’s staff took the Davis family on a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol. Part of the city of Miramar, in Broward County, is in District 17.
