Today, U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) issued the following statement on the U.S. Department of Justice’s Audit of the Miami Police Internal Affairs Unit

“I asked the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the seven police-involved shooting deaths by the Miami Police Department in 2010 and 2011, and this preliminary audit seems to justify this action. Fifty unfinished investigations of police by its own Internal Affairs unit is unacceptable, particularly in light of the loss of so many lives in this community. Addressing the problems in the Internal Affairs unit is just a first step. I am urging Police Chief Orosa to continue to work in good faith with the Justice Department and to complete a top-to-bottom review of his department. The culture of the Miami police has to change. In addition to defending the community, the police must respect it as well.”
