Today, U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) issued the following statement on Women’s History Month:
“As a Congresswoman and member of the Congressional Black Caucus, it is an honor to go right from Black History Month to Women’s History Month. As an educator, I think it is outstanding that the theme for 2012 ties together women’s education and empowerment.
“This month, we celebrate Mary McLeod-Bethune for her need to create higher education outlets for African Americans, Linda Carol Brown for her courage to transition where African Americans fit in the public school system, and Michelle Obama for showing women that you can use a Harvard degree to both help change the world and raise a family.
“This month is the most appropriate time to acknowledge the grassroots leaders of education – the mothers and public school teachers. They deserve awareness for motivating and molding our young generation. Thank you for showing our future leaders that the road to success is through learning how to think and creatively solve problems, and not tied to just doing well on standardized testing.
“I also urge women to use this year’s theme to encourage female students to explore careers in the STEM fields. Our world is transforming to a technology-based society. We need the next generation of women to include more scientists, doctors, engineers and mathematicians, so we can retain our competitive edge in the global economy.”
