Rep. Frederica Wilson (FL-17) today issued a statement following a Florida federal judge’s ruling of health care reform as unconstitutional:

“Today’s ruling is misguided and without merit.

“Health care reform is a critical lifeline for Americans with pre-existing conditions who were routinely denied coverage by insurance companies and seniors who previously fell victim to the Medicare prescription drug ‘donut hole.’ The law is fully constitutional under the Commerce Clause and a wide range of scholars, lawyers, and medical professionals from across the political spectrum have pushed for the legislation to be upheld.

“South Floridians need these protections now and they should not be stripped away. I look forward to an appeals court overturning this decision and am encouraged that today’s ruling fell short of directing the government to stop implementing these critical reforms.”

Rep. Frederica S. Wilson is a first-term congresswoman representing the 17th District of Florida, including Northern Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward Counties. She is a former state legislator and school principal and the founder of the 5000 Role Models for Excellence Project, a mentoring program for young males at risk of dropping out of school.
