The sold-out breakfast turned into an impromptu tribute to civil rights icon, John Lewis

No one said the name “Donald Trump” at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Breakfast Monday but it was clear that most of the speeches supported the keynote speaker, Congressman John Lewis, who is in a feud with Trump.

“We are in the presence of a true American hero,” U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio told the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project young men.

Washington, D.C. Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson released the following statement on why she is not attending President-elect Donald J. Trump’s inauguration ceremony:

Much has been made about Democratic lawmakers sitting out President-elect Donald J. Trump’s inauguration ceremony. I struggled for months to make the choice between the ceremony and a family wedding also scheduled to take place this weekend. I truly felt torn and it was a difficult decision, but I ultimately decided to stay in Miami to attend my god-daughter’s nuptials.

There was a time that when people heard my story — incarcerated mother, absentee dad — their first inclination was to feel sorry for me. I would have, too, if I were in their place, but the way I grew up, self-pity was a luxury I couldn’t afford.

The early years were actually good. My five older siblings and I lived with our mother in a nice, two-story home. I never lived with my father, but he’d visit me and, on rare occasions, take me to his house. When I was about 6, he just stopped coming around.

Provide Free Health Screenings and HIV Testing on World AIDS Day

MIAMI – Hundreds of people across Miami-Dade and Broward counties lined up to get free, confidential HIV/AIDS tests on World AIDS Day, a global health day observed annually on December 1.  The multi-site testing event was hosted by Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson, in partnership with Walgreens and several local health clinics.

MIAMI – In observance of World AIDS Day, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) will partner with Walgreens and several health clinics throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties to offer free health screenings and HIV/AIDS testing on Thursday, December 1, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Giveaways for individuals who are tested will be provided by Walgreens.
