Do You Know Why I Support The American Jobs Act?

October 17, 2011

Dear Friend,

Do you know why I support the American Jobs Act?

Because I support the President, and I support Florida’s workers!

The current economic crisis is ravaging our community.  Unfortunately, some leaders in Washington continue to argue for tax breaks for the super-rich, and for allowing multi-national corporations to continue to ship our jobs overseas.  I think the best way to create new jobs is to reinvest public funds in the public – to reinvest in YOU.

President Obama agrees with me.  Instead of focusing on tax breaks for the rich, President Obama’s American Jobs Act would extend payroll tax cuts for 160 million American workers, and extend unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed.

As a former elementary school teacher, principal, and Miami-Dade County School Board member, I know the American Jobs Act is the type of plan I can support.  Nowhere would benefit more than the state of Florida; According to the Miami Herald, Miami-Dade and Broward Counties alone could receive nearly $400 million. Overall, Florida could receive $1.2 billion worth of funds to rebuild and modernize schools (filling gaps created by Governor Scott) while creating up to 16,600 jobs for construction workers, engineers, and maintenance staff, according to the same report. Recently, dozens of concerned parents, teachers, and community leaders rallied at Miami Norland Senior High School in support of the Act, which would help rebuild schools just like Norland.

It is absolutely critical to get our community working again. It is absolutely critical that we support the American Jobs Act.  I urge you to join me.
