President Signs Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson's Bill Naming New FBI Building in Miramar After Slain Agents
It was an honor to attend the FBI's April 10, 2015 dedication ceremony for its new Miramar headquarters.
On April 11, 1986, Special Agents Benjamin P. Grogan and Jerry L. Dove were killed in the line of duty during an exchange of bullets with robbery suspects. It still remains the bloodiest day the FBI has experienced. At the end of that spring morning firefight, two agents lay dead and five were seriously injured.
I introduced H.R. 1092, which designates the FBI’s newly built state-of-the-art federal building as the “Benjamin P. Grogan and Jerry L. Dove Federal Building.” With the partisan nature of todays politics, it was no small feat getting this bill through congress in just four weeks. After garnering bipartisan leadership support, the bill overwhelmingly passed both chambers of congress and was signed by President Obama on April 7, 2015.
I am proud to commend and honor these brave Americans. They truly embody the ideals upon which this great country was founded. Special Agents Benjamin P. Grogan and Jerry L. Dove deserve to be lifted up from that street in South Miami and have their names high where the world can know that we are proud of their sacrifice for their nation.
